Concrete Canoe
The Concrete Canoe Competition involves earning points for paddling races, a design paper, an oral presentation, and a final product. For the construction of a competitive canoe, students on the concrete canoe team put countless man-hours into ideas for a hull design, experimenting with different mix designs, and conducting strength tests to determine the best concrete mix for producing a sturdy yet buoyant and lightweight product. The team also acquires hands-on experience in creating a mold for the canoe and paddling to compete in a series of races. After months of paddling practice, the team placed 3rd in Women's Sprint, 2nd in Men's Sprint, 3rd in Women's Slalom, and 2nd in Men's Slalom. They also placed 1st for their Technical Presentation. Overall, the Canoe team placed 4th overall at PSWS 2023.

Project Manager
Gavin Kondo
Civil Engineering, Senior gavink2@hawaii.edu Aloha my name is Gavin Kondo, and I am the concrete canoe project manager for the upcoming PSWS 2024. I am currently a senior majoring in Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii Manoa. My high school days were across the street at Mid-Pacific Institute. As we gear up for the year ahead, my game plan revolves around four objectives: crafting a lighter mix, introducing a fresh event that bridges past and present ASCE concrete canoe members, studying from our past successes and failures, and leveraging my outrigger canoe paddling roots to lift our team to new heights. These objectives are to help secure a great spot at the upcoming PSWS, and to ensure the continuity of progressive knowledge to be passed down. Outside of school, you’ll find me paddling around Diamond Head, fishing on the flats, and hiking the outdoors. |
Paddling Captain
Amier Ishaque
Civil Engineering, Sophomore aishaque@hawaii.edu Hi everyone! My name is Amier Ishaque and I will be the concrete canoe paddling/junior captain as well as one of the outreach chairs. I graduated from Radford High School in 2022 and I am currently a sophomore. In my free time, I like to go to the beach, work out at home, and drive around the island with my friends. My goals for this upcoming year will be to have more underclassmen involvement for the ASCE student Chapter in Concrete Canoe/Outreach, reach out to schools and provide them with knowledge of what civil engineering is, and guide High school students how to maximize their first year experience as a civil engineer. |
Construction Captain
Jhon Bilen
Civil Engineering, Senior jbilen@hawaii.edu Aloha! I'm Jhon, I will be serving as your construction captain for the concrete canoe this year. I graduated from Waipahu High and I am currently a senior, my aim is to build the canoe once, having the mentality of "build it right the first time." Through upfront efforts, I am confident in attaining this goal. Though the results of the final race are beyond our control, the work our team will dedicate to practicing and being our best selves is what I look forward to. When I am free from engineering duties, my top three hobbies are "eating" like eric cartman, getting swole, and sleeping like a cat. |
Mix Design Captain
