Concrete Canoe

The Concrete Canoe Competition involves earning points for paddling races, a design paper, an oral presentation, and a final product. For the construction of a competitive canoe, students on the concrete canoe team place countless man-hours into  ideas for a hull design, experimenting with different mix designs, and conducting strength tests to determine the best concrete mix for producing a sturdy yet buoyant and lightweight product. The team also acquires hands-on experience in creating a mold for the canoe and paddling to compete in a series of races. After months of paddling practice, the team placed 2nd in Men's Sprint, Women's Sprint, Men's Slalom, Women's Slalom, and Co-ed. Overall, the Canoe team place 2nd in Races and 4th overall at PSWC 2019. Instead of an in-person conference PSWC 2021 went online. Although a full scale canoe was not constructed and no paddling races were held, the team participated by submitting technical reports and delivering a presentation. Overall, the Canoe team placed 2nd overall at PSWC 2021 and got a wild card to the 2021 Virtual Concrete Canoe Competition+. Overall, the team placed 14 out of 23 schools at Nationals.

Hi everyone, my name is Darrian Cremer. I am this year’s Corresponding Secretary and Concrete Canoe Construction Captain. I graduated from HP Baldwin High School in 2018 and I’ll be a senior this year. My goals are to bring in as much resources from outside organizations as possible and construct the perfect canoe. When I am not studying, I'm probably at the beach, playing sports, or sleeping.

Hello, my name is Kay Hian Calpito. I graduated from Waipahu High school in 2018, and I am currently a senior at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
In this academic year, I am the community service chair and mixture design captain of the concrete canoe team. As a community service chair, I plan to open up more volunteer opportunities for our ASCE members to serve and connect with our island. As a resident of Hawai'i, I enjoy hiking, relaxing at the beach with family and friends, and exploring the rest of O'ahu.
I am excited and thrilled to be learning with all of you.
